El Near-Earth Object Surveyor (NEO Surveyor) de la NASA, un telescopio espacial dise\u00f1ado para buscar los asteroides y cometas m\u00e1s esquivos, ha superado una rigurosa revisi\u00f3n t\u00e9cnica y program\u00e1tica.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ahora la misi\u00f3n est\u00e1 en transici\u00f3n hacia la fase final de dise\u00f1o <\/strong>y fabricaci\u00f3n <\/strong>y estableciendo su base t\u00e9cnica, de costes y de calendario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La misi\u00f3n apoya los objetivos de la Oficina <\/strong>de Coordinaci\u00f3n <\/strong>de Defensa Planetaria <\/strong>de la NASA <\/strong>(PDCO): descubrir y caracterizar al menos el 90% de los objetos cercanos a la Tierra <\/strong>de m\u00e1s de 140 metros de di\u00e1metro que se acercan a menos de 48 millones de kil\u00f3metros de la \u00f3rbita <\/strong>de nuestro planeta<\/strong>. Los objetos de este tama\u00f1o son capaces de causar importantes da\u00f1os regionales<\/strong>, o algo peor, si impactan contra la Tierra<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abNEO Surveyor <\/strong>representa la pr\u00f3xima generaci\u00f3n para la capacidad de la NASA <\/strong>de detectar<\/strong>, rastrear <\/strong>y caracterizar <\/strong>r\u00e1pidamente objetos cercanos <\/strong>a la Tierra <\/strong>potencialmente peligrosos<\/strong>\u00ab, dijo en un comunicado Lindley Johnson, Oficial de Defensa Planetaria de la NASA <\/strong>en PDCO<\/strong>. \u00abLos telescopios terrestres <\/strong>siguen siendo esenciales para que podamos vigilar continuamente los cielos, pero un observatorio infrarrojo basado en el espacio es la \u00faltima altura que permitir\u00e1 la estrategia de defensa planetaria<\/strong> de la NASA<\/strong>.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gestionado por el Laboratorio <\/strong>de Propulsi\u00f3n <\/strong>a Chorro<\/strong>, NEO Surveyor <\/strong>viajar\u00e1 1,5 millones de kil\u00f3metros hasta una regi\u00f3n <\/strong>de estabilidad gravitatoria <\/strong>-llamada punto de Lagrange L1- entre la Tierra y el Sol<\/strong>, donde la nave orbitar\u00e1 durante sus cinco a\u00f1os de misi\u00f3n principal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n
